What God Says

What does God say about anxiety and worry?

Jesus speaks directly to worry: do not worry about your life, what you will eat or wear, or about tomorrow, because your Father knows what you need. He invites the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest, and tells His friends not to let their hearts be troubled. Through Isaiah, God promises to carry His people even into old age.

Here are those passages in His own words, each with its chapter and verse, from the Berean Standard Bible.

On anxiety and worry

  1. Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

    Matthew 6:25–27
  2. “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

    Matthew 11:28–30
  3. “Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”

    Luke 10:41–42
  4. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storehouse or barn; yet God feeds them. How much more valuable you are than the birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? So if you cannot do such a small thing, why do you worry about the rest?”

    Luke 12:22–26
  5. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.”

    John 14:1–3
  6. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

    John 14:27
  7. “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”

    John 16:33
  8. Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

    Isaiah 41:10
  9. Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you.

    Isaiah 46:4
  10. But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.

    2 Corinthians 12:9
  11. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.

    Matthew 6:33
  12. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

    Isaiah 55:8–9
